Couples Counseling – One Principle for Success

Couples counseling is effective. That is, if it is done correctly. In more cases than not, couples report better relationships after participating in couple’s therapy.

There are a few approaches to couple’s therapy that have been found to be effective through research. John Gottman’s method is one of those and Susan Johnson’s Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples is another.

John Gottman researched how to recognize a couple that will end up divorcing versus one that stays together. One significant factor, among many, is whether or not a couple has a strong love map – he calls it. This has to do with how well you know your partner, their interests and likes and experiences in life. And how well they know yours. Being interested in them as a person and not just your spouse is important.

Certain therapists can specialize in the Gottman Method of couples counseling. We offer this type of therapy.
